Wine Cap (Stropharia rugosoannulata), also known as King Stropharia or the Garden Giant, is one of the easiest mushrooms you can grow. It thrives in hardwood woodchips and mulch beds, making it a favorite for both beginners and experienced cultivators.

Part of what makes Winecap so beginner-friendly is how easy it is to recognize, it has a bold, distinctive look that’s hard to mistake for anything else. Once established, it rapidly colonizes woodchips, often producing a light flush in spring followed by an abundant harvest in fall.

Beyond producing delicious mushrooms, Winecap plays a powerful role in the garden, breaking down woody material and building rich, living soil, making it a perfect addition to garden beds and permaculture systems.

Build Rich Soil. Grow Better Plants. Harvest Mushrooms.

Garden Giant Living Mulch turns ordinary woodchips into living, breathing soil.

This isn’t just mulch.
It’s a soil-building engine powered by Winecap (Stropharia rugosoannulata) -  one of the easiest and most rewarding mushrooms you can grow outdoors.

Just spread it in your garden beds, around fruit trees, or along pathways. Water it. Let the mycelium do the heavy lifting.

What It Does for Your Garden

🌱 Builds Real Soil
Breaks down woodchips and mulch into dark, nutrient-rich humus that feeds your plants naturally.

💧 Improves Water Retention
Thick mycelial networks help hold moisture in the soil, reducing drought stress.

🪱 Attracts Worms & Boosts Biology
Creates a thriving underground ecosystem that supports stronger root systems.

🌎 Reduces Erosion & Runoff
Mycelium binds soil particles together, keeping nutrients where they belong -  in your garden.

🌼 Supports Pollinators
Healthier soil → stronger plants → more blooms.

And Yes… You Get Mushrooms Too

Once established, Garden Giant produces large, wine-colored mushrooms with a mild, meaty flavor.

  • Easy to identify
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Fruits lightly in spring
  • Often produces an abundant fall harvest
  • Can return for multiple seasons

So you’re not just improving your soil -  you’re growing dinner.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • No sourcing woodchips
  • No pasteurizing
  • No complicated steps

Just spread. Water. Grow.

Whether you’re building raised beds, upgrading mulch pathways, or designing a permaculture system, Winecap Living Mulch works quietly beneath the surface - transforming waste into living soil.

🍄 What's Included

Wine Cap inoculated wood chips: 5lb

🌱 How to Plant Your Living Mulch

These are fully colonized woodchips - not sawdust.
That means the hard work is already done.

You have two easy options:

Option 1: Add Directly to Your Garden

  1. Spread the inoculated woodchips 1–3 inches thick around plants, trees, raised beds, or along pathways.
  2. Water thoroughly.
  3. Cover with a thin layer of straw to help retain moisture.
  4. Keep lightly moist, especially during dry periods.

That’s it. The mycelium will spread, break down organic matter, and begin building rich soil beneath the surface.

Option 2 (Recommended): Expand Your Culture

For larger areas, you can multiply your bag.

  1. Lay down a fresh layer of hardwood woodchips.
  2. Evenly distribute the inoculated woodchips throughout the new chips.
  3. Mix lightly or layer like lasagna.
  4. Water well.
  5. Cover with straw for moisture retention.

The mycelium will colonize the fresh woodchips over time, expanding your soil-building system naturally.

Garden Giant thrives in hardwood woodchips and mulch beds and typically fruits in spring and fall once established. Perfect for garden beds, orchard rows, and permaculture systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wine Cap Living Mulch?
Wine Cap Living Mulch is fully colonized hardwood woodchips inoculated with Stropharia rugosoannulata (also known as Garden Giant or King Stropharia). Simply spread it over fresh hardwood chips or use it to start a new mushroom bed.
Is this sawdust spawn?
No. This product contains fully colonized hardwood woodchips, making it ideal for outdoor mulch beds and much easier for beginners to use.
Where can I use it?
Wine Cap Living Mulch works well in:

• Raised garden beds
• Vegetable gardens
• Around fruit trees
• Berry patches
• Mulched pathways
• Permaculture systems
• Woodland gardens
Does it improve my soil?
Yes! As the mycelium grows, it breaks down woodchips into nutrient-rich humus, improves water retention, supports beneficial soil organisms, and helps build healthy living soil.
Will I grow mushrooms too?
Yes. Once established, Wine Caps typically produce mushrooms in the spring and again with a larger flush in the fall, depending on weather and growing conditions.
How long does it take before mushrooms appear?
The mycelium begins colonizing immediately, but mushrooms usually appear after the colony has become established. Many gardeners see their first mushrooms within several months, with the best harvests often occurring during the first fall.
Can I expand the 5 lb bag?
Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it. Simply layer the colonized woodchips with fresh hardwood chips, water well, and allow the mycelium to spread naturally over time.
What kind of woodchips should I use?
Fresh hardwood woodchips work best. Avoid cedar, pressure-treated wood, and heavily resinous softwoods.
Does it need shade?
Yes. Partial to full shade is ideal. The mycelium prefers cool, moist conditions and should not be allowed to dry out.
How often should I water it?
Keep the woodchips consistently moist, especially during dry weather. Once established, the mycelium becomes much more resilient.
Will it come back every year?
Often, yes. As long as food (fresh woodchips) is available and the bed stays healthy, Wine Caps can continue fruiting for multiple seasons.
Is this good for beginners?
Definitely! Wine Cap is one of the easiest outdoor mushrooms to grow and is one of our favorite recommendations for first-time growers.
Can I use this in my vegetable garden?
Yes. Wine Caps are excellent companions for vegetables, helping recycle mulch into fertile soil while supporting healthy microbial activity.
Is it safe around pets and children?
The mycelium itself is safe to have in the garden. As with any wild or cultivated mushroom, harvested mushrooms should only be eaten after proper identification and cooking.
How should I store it if I can't plant it right away?
Store it in a cool location out of direct sunlight and plant it as soon as possible for the best results. Fresh spawn is always the most vigorous.
